The Beaumont Boys Bash weekend kicked off Thursday night in a big way with a wild game dinner to raise money for the Hughen Center for physically challenged children and adults in Port Arthur.
The dinner hosted by country singer Zona Jones of Beaumont featured celebrity chef Grady Spears, entertainment by Daryle Singeltary and Mark Chessnut and included appearances by Dan Pastorini, Jordan Babineaux, Elvin Bethea, Willie Alexander, Goose Gonsoulin, David Carter, Gary Hammond, John Schuhmacher, and others.
The highlight of the evening was when Steve Mostyn of the Mostyn Law Firm in Beaumont donated 2 million dollars to the Hughen Center.
Mostyn also provided a private plane to fly in a legendary former N.F.L. coach to the Jack Brooks Regional Airport for the Boys Bash Weekend.
Students from the Bob Hope Charter School and the Hughen Center waited with cameras in hand for a plane carrying legendary former NFL coach and Southeast Texas native Bum Phillips and his wife Debbie.
The 87 year old from Orange coached at PNG and Nederland. He later became the head coach of the Houston Oilers and then the New Orleans Saints.
Phillips was thrilled to get such a warm welcome to Jefferson County.
LEGER:
"How did you like your welcoming committee here?"
PHILLIPS
"Real good, I tell you they picked out the best looking girls in school just to send out."
LEGER:
"They all want pictures and autographs.. What are you looking forward to this weekend?"
PHILLIPS:
"I've got lots of great friends everywhere.. But I've got more of them right here in Nederland than anywhere else in the world."
LEGER:
"What does it mean to you to have Bump Philips involved in your event?"
MONTE OSBURN/HUGHEN CENTER
"It means the world. Coach Phillips and his wife Debbie have been supporters, friends and contributors for many many years."
AND THIS YEAR PHILLIPS IS HOSTING A GOLF TOURNAMENT DURING THE BEAUMONT BOYS BASH WEEKEND TO RAISE EVEN MORE MONEY FOR THE HUGHEN CENTER.
OSBURN:
"the golf tournament is sold out with 74 teams and a waiting list and all it took is two words Bum Phillips."
PHILLIPS:
"started out coaching in this country and that was my first opportunity to work with children and since that time I've had lots of opportunities but I always come back to home.. Back to here where it started."
AND SOON ONE OF THE ROADS THE COACH USED TO TRAVEL DURING HIS DAYS IN MID COUNTY WILL HAVE SIGNS THAT READ BUM PHILLIPS WAY.
LEGER
What do you think about the fact they've named a road after you here?
PHILLIPS
"Usually they wait until after you're gone.. I appreciate it .. It's an honor .. But It's something I could have lived without too."
The events open to the public include the Songwriters night Friday evening at Dixie Dance Hall. Admission is 20 dollars at the door, $15 in advance.
