Mostyn Law Firm Offers a Helping Hand to No More Victims, Inc.
In an effort to keep the doors open, the Mostyn Law Firm has donated $10,000 to No More Victims, Inc. (NMV). The purpose of NMV is to foster growth and development of children of incarcerated parents by addressing the physical, emotional and scholastic needs of children experiencing the trauma that surrounds parental incarceration. This outstanding organization is lead by the founder and CEO, Marilyn Gambrell.
Ms. Gambrell is a former Texas parole officer and an administrator of two correctional facilities. She has authored a series of books on the topic of children with incarcerated parents titled “Cherish the Child Within.” In addition to being the subject of numerous news and magazine reports, the Lifetime Movie Network recently released the movie “Fighting the Odds-The Marilyn Gambrell Story.”
“This is a cause that most people do not think about. We sometimes forget that not all children are like our own. My kids don’t think anything of it when we tell them they are special and loved. But it means everything to these kids at NMV who get the opposite message everyday. They hear, ‘you’ll end up just like your dad.’ They need to be told they are special, they are loved and they can succeed,” said Steve Mostyn. Ms. Gambrell added, “The Mostyn Family is so wonderful and we are so grateful for their support in addressing the needs and issues of children experiencing the trauma of parental incarceration. We love and deeply appreciate Steve and Amber Mostyn.”
The No More Victims family is happy to celebrate their 2010 graduating seniors and those receiving their high school diplomas. “This year we are so happy and proud to share with you that our first four year college graduate, Devon Wade, is graduating from LSU with a 4.0 and just received the Truman Scholarship, the first African-American to receive this scholarship in LSU's history,” shared Ms. Gambrell. Devon's father has been in the penitentiary for nineteen years and his mother was just released after nearly fifteen years. At the age of 15, Devon turned to NMV to learn how to move past the stigma of being a child with incarcerated parents. Devon began to excel in academics and extra-curricular activities becoming Student Body President, band drum major, member of the track team, member of the National Honor Society and graduated Magna Cum Laude.
“We also have two valedictorians this year as well, Laura Rea, the first in her family's history to graduate from high school and has received a full scholarship to Texas A&M University,” added Ms. Gambrell. Laura's three uncles, one of which was her father figure, have been incarcerated. She plans to become a medical doctor.
Amber and Steve Mostyn, along with Ms. Gambrell, strongly believe that these children are worth fighting for. This great program has been limited regionally because Ms. Gambrell simply cannot handle more with her limited resources. The hope for this new partnership is that this program will create a roadmap for success for other programs of its kind across the State of Texas. “We all agree that no child should have to pay for the mistakes of their parents and that no child should be thrown away. Once you find out about these kids and the terrible things they face daily, you want to help. They say it takes a village to raise a child – these kids need leaders from the school district, state, city and county elected officials, community leaders and regular folks. This organization does great things on a shoe string budget,” said Amber Mostyn.
For No More Victims, Inc. to continue to grow, help more people and offer the same great services there must be involvement. The donation of the Mostyn Law Firm is a step in the right direction. “We are truly proud to be able to be a part of a group that will help these kids become hard working, happy citizens in or community. We hope to form a long-term relationship to ensure this program continues to do great work,” said Steve Mostyn.
