Koko Inn Guest Slips Into Large Settlement
A jury has awarded $1.5 million to a motel guest who slipped and broke his foot in 1995.
Jurors in the 237th District Court rendered a verdict Thursday night in favor of Arthur Mayo of Park City, Utah. Mayo sued Lubbock's Koko Inn for medical expenses and lost wages resulting from the accident.
Mayo slipped on concrete fragments on the motel's sidewalk. The debris was from renovation work being done at the hotel, according to the lawsuit.
The jury determined that Koko Inn was 100 percent liable for not keeping the area safe for guests.
Tommy J. Turner of Lubbock and Steve Mostyn of Houston represented Mayo, who has been unable to work since the accident.
Mayo previously toured with musicians such as Van Halen, Metallica, the Rolling Stones, Genesis and Madonna designing and constructing special effects for their shows, according to his attorneys. He won an technical design Emmy award in 1994 for the set of Barbra Streisand's world tour.
