10 Tips for Hiring a Contractor After a Natural Disaster

DO - Ask family, friends, and neighbors if they know a restoration contractor that they would recommend, and create a short list of references. Then ask any contractor to provide you with references from their past clients.
 

DO - Ask for multiple estimates and get them in writing, once you have vetted enough potential options to create a list of reputable contractors. Then compare your contractor's number with the cost of your insurance provider's estimate and see if they are close.

DO - Ensure that they are licensed, insured, and reputable according to the Better Business Bureau, and take note of any other relevant information on the BBB website. 

DO - Only pay portions up front, halfway, etc. once you select a restoration contractor and agree on what is expected of completion. 

DO - Only seek out industry-certified professionals, such as contractors from the American Indoor Air Quality Council (ACAC), Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA), Institute of Inspection, Cleaning & Restoration Certification (IICRC), National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA), and (Restoration Industry Association (RIA). Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA), and (Restoration Industry Association (RIA).

DO - Review the work after it's done and make sure that quality materials were used.

Don't pay the contractor more than around 30 percent of the cost upfront.

Don’t pay in cash.

Don't accept assessment or verification of completion from a person who is employed at the same company as the contractor. 

Don’t make the final payment until you have inspected the finished job and are satisfied with the work.
